Being an internationally important area, the Isle of Purbeck is home to a variety of plants and animals. there are not many places where you can go from the shoreline, over sand dunes to heathland up upland grass to woodland, and yet in this small corner of the UK you can.
Durlston is one the very best places in Britain for wildlife watching. Over 578 different wildflowers grow at Durlston, along with 34 different kinds of butterflies and thousands of different invertebrates (including Britain’s second biggest insect!). A walk through Durlston’s meadows is like a journey through a miniature rainforest!
If you are more interested the little creatures flapping around, then Lulworth plays host to its own unique butterfly - the Lulworth Skipper. There are also planty of rare birds that can be spotted in the area. And if its the slithering types that appeal, well Studland is home to all 6 types of native reptile!
